After lunch I resumed walking on Latrán, which is the street in the area of the same name that runs uphill.
Well what else would you call a pizzeria in this area?
Another one of those buildings with an interesting patterned facade.
Finally the side street to the castle entrance. You might find it useful to have the map on that site open.
The castle tower hove into view.
There is a bear moat near the entrance. It seems historically the bear moat was used to protect the castle from intruders. I'm not actually that close, this is a telephoto shot.
This is actually the 2nd courtyard of the castle, the 1st was just after the gate.
A better view of the castle tower.
This is a connecting walkway.
And a view from the edge.
We are now inside the castle theatre. Photo op!
Balconies and windows.
Leaving via the connecting corridor to the Cloak Bridge.
From the bridge one can look out over the town.
And the Vltava.
The other side of the bridge looks out onto a park and a car park in the distance.
A bridge in town upstream of where I crossed the Vltava. If you look at a map, the castle and the gardens occupy the west bank of the river and we sort of looped back heading south west.
Another view showing where we came from.
The baroque gardens are extensive and occupy more area than the castle.
Very orderly.
Water from the fountain tumbles down to the level below.
On the grounds is a revolving auditorium used for performances in summer.
I liked this clump of flowering plants.
I left the gardens via the northern corner and this is a view back to the Cloak Bridge.
And a view of the bridge showing the levels and the vaulted arches supporting it over the chasm.
Now we are walking along a small stream called Polečnice bordering Jeleni Park, heading back towards town with the castle to our right.
We duck under the overhead bridge heading towards the Vltava.
That upstream wooden bridge we saw earlier.
A view of the castle from the Vltava.
A wooden water mill.
One of the smaller squares off the main route.
Part of the town I had not passed through on the way in.
The main square again. The hour was getting late as you can see from the shadows.
I retraced my path to the bus station, taking one last view on the way out.
The outskirts of the town look like normal suburbia. But there are still a lot of pensions and other accommodation in this area.
There are no more pictures for this day. I retrieved my luggage and caught the bus to České Budějovice. From the bus station there I took a taxi to my pension as they were only open until 1900. I'll relate that in the next post.
